 4 hurt in rollercoaster accident

08 July 2014 09:55:48 timesofmalta.com

A rollercoaster derailed at a California amusement park, slightly injuring four people and leaving 22 stranded about 20 feet in the air. The Ninja ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain struck a tree branch shortly before 5.30pm local time yesterday and stopped, said Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Televised news reports showed at least one of the cars that are normally suspended beneath a track dangling at an angle, derailed at the front. Firefighters and park maintenance workers in harnesses could be seen removing the riders one by one from rollercoaster cars. Others waited patiently, some talking with each other and others resting with their eyes occasionally closed. The last of the 22 people stuck on the rollercoaster were rescued about three hours after the accident. Mr Pittman said four people on the ride received minor injuries, but they and other riders remained on the stalled rollercoaster after the accident. The Ninja rollercoaster can hold up to 28 riders. "As you shoot down the snake-like steel track you'll grip the hillsides and blast through the trees swiftly, slicing through the landscape. Ninja pivots with precision as you narrowly miss...

Guantanamo trial in 9/11 veers off track again

17 April 2014 21:22:50 WN.com - World News

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — An effort to prosecute the self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack and four co-defendants veered off track again Thursday as a pretrial hearing ended with new obstacles that threaten to further derail the case before a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay. Teams of lawyers managed barely four hours of court time over four days at the U.S. base in Cuba, bogged down by the potential legal implications of an apparent FBI investigation of the defense. After nearly two years and 10 pretrial sessions, a trial date remains elusive and could be years away. The prosecution had sought to start jury selection early next year, but that now seems...

The Malaysia Airlines flight missing since Saturday had veered hundreds of miles off its flight path by the time of its last radar tracking and appeared to be flying in the opposite direction from its intended destination of Beijing, Malaysian military sources were quoted as telling local media Tuesday. "The surprise disclosure would in part explain the decision by Malaysia two days ago to expand the search area by 100 nautical miles to cover the Strait of Malacca," nearly 350 miles west of Flight 370's filed flight path, the South China Morning Post reported, citing unnamed military sources. A local Malay-language newspaper, Berita Harian, also quoted Malaysian Air Force Gen. Rodzali Daud...
