This year, Malta marks the 15th anniversary of its debut in international rugby. Tomorrow, the Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) will hold an event to commemorate the occasion. Two teams featuring former international players will meet in a friendly game at Marsa. Ten ex-international players are flying in for the occasion. The teams, aptly named ‘The Pioneers’ and ‘The Barbarians’, will be made up of players from different eras. Gates open at 15.30, and the match, consisting of two 30-minutes halves, will kick off at 17.00. The following day, on Saturday, Malta take on the Czech Republic in a European Cup Nations qualifier at the Hibernians Stadium. It all started 15 years ago, in November 2000, when a group of amateur rugby players, led by coach Len Ethell, from New Zealand, travelled to Moldova via a stopover in Istanbul for Malta’s first ever full International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) test match. This was to be the beginning of a remarkable, exciting and sometimes bumpy journey for the sport of rugby union in Malta. The Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) had only recently been reconstituted from its predecessor, the Rugby Association of Malta (RAM), after a period of...

Alton Towers will reopen to the public today after shutting its gates following a roller coaster crash which saw four people seriously injured. The theme park has been closed since Tuesday, and the chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, which owns the park, says it is committed to ensuring people can visit again “with confidence”. Sixteen people in total were injured on The Smiler ride when the carriage they were in collided with another that had come to a halt on the track. Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, said the incident was a “terrible event” for everyone involved. He added: “We are very aware of the impact it will have on those involved and we are doing all we can to provide our support to those injured and their families. “We closed the park immediately while preliminary investigations took place and to give our staff time to come to terms with the accident and its aftermath. “In recent days our management team have been engaged in a thorough review of our operating and safety procedures before making this decision.” However, the X-Sector of the Staffordshire theme park – which houses The Smiler – will remain closed until further notice to allow...

Alton Towers is to reopen “within the next few days” but the ride involved in the crash in which 16 people were injured will remain shut for the foreseeable future, the company which runs the park has announced. Four people were seriously hurt in Tuesday’s accident involving the Smiler ride and the Staffordshire tourist attraction has been closed since then, racking up losses of around £500,000 a day for owner Merlin Entertainment. The company said today that new “safety protocols” were being issued. The company said: “The safety of our visitors is our fundamental priority. We have a strong safety record at Alton Towers and across the Merlin Group. “Today we are enhancing our safety standards by issuing an additional set of safety protocols and procedures that will reinforce the safe operation of our multi-car roller coasters. These are effective immediately. “Each roller coaster has its own individual operating process and characteristics. Our central safety management team, together with local park operations, will now work to implement and brief operating staff on these protocols. “As a consequence, two roller coaster rides have been withdrawn from service until the new...
