A feast of light in Rio De Janeiro

02 December 2014 17:25:50 timesofmalta.com

Just a few weeks after the city of Geelong in Australia lit up a floating Christmas tree in Corio Bay which cost them almost 1 million dollars, Rio De Janeiro topped their efforts by unveiling an 85 metre high floating Christmas tree. Last Sunday thousands of people turned up at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in Rio De Janeiro to witness the unveiling of the world’s tallest floating Christmas tree. This is the 19th year of the annual event which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2014 is ‘A Christmas of Light’ celebrating peace and brotherhood and symbolising the importance of light in our lives. The Bradesco Seguros Christmas tree weighs 542 tons and is as tall as a 28-storey building. It is illuminated with 3.1 million miniature bulbs, 120,000 meters of light strands, 24,000 meters of tubular structure, 2,150 strobes and 100 LED reflectors. The tree also has 5 generators on nearby barges.
