FIFA President Sepp Blatter said today that the dates that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be played will be decided before the end of 2014. "We are making now all these consultations and they will be finished at the end of 2014 so in 2015 we can make a decision if yes or not we will play in summer or in winter. The tendency is definitely that it's too hot in summer, let's find the solution to play in winter. But in the same year, not in January of the next year." Speaking after arriving at the FIFA 2013 Ballon d'Or awards ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday (January 13), Blatter was responding to questions about FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke's statement on French radio last Wednesday (January 8) that he thought the Qatar World Cup would happen between November 30 and January 15. "We are making now all these consultations and they will be finished at the end of 2014 so in 2015 we can make a decision if yes or not we will play in summer or in winter. The tendency is definitely that it's too hot in summer, let's find the solution to play in winter. But in the same year, not in January of the next year," said Blatter. Many of the world's top players and coaches were...

Following abundant snowfall in the past few weeks, the Alpe d’Huez resort in the Northern Alps opened five of its 133 pistes, all located in the Sarenne glacier and 3,000 meters above sea level, on Saturday 16th November. Fabrice Hurth, head of the tourist office in Alpe d’Huez, emphasised how rare it was to open the glacier this early in the season and in such good conditions. While the partial opening is only taking place on weekends and amounts to no more than 10 out of the station’s 250 kilometres worth of pistes, the rest of Alpe d’Huez is expected to open its doors on 6th December. Other resorts are also open early with the record-holder this year being Tignes, a regular skiing location for autumn snow enthusiasts, which opened its glacier on 12th October. This weekend will see the opening of Val Thorens while the rest of the Alps resorts will open early December. Ski stations in the Côte d'Azur such as Isola 2000 and Auron will open on 7th December with dates for the other destinations still to come. A brand new piste should see the light of day in Valberg's Eguilles sector, to make up for the Tony piste being often closed off to tourists for professional training. Stan Aron
