5-Star Italian party wants vote on euro

0.7552834 22 June 2016 23:59:40 The Asian Age

Italy’s anti-establishment 5-Star movement, buoyed by its big gains in local elections, used its resurgent strength to press demands for a national a referendum on whether to keep the euro. “We want a consultative referendum on the euro. The euro as it is today does not work. We either have alternative currencies or a ‘Euro 2’,” Mr Luigi Di Maio, a vice-president of the Lower House of Parliament, said during a talk show on Tuesday night. While any such referendums on the EU or the euro would merely be a test of public opinion because Italian law does not allow referendums to change international treaties, a victory would send a clear signal to the government. The 5-Star movement, which is carefully watching the result of Thursday’s referendum in Britain on whether to leave the EU, has called for two different currencies in Europe, one for the rich northern countries another for southern countries. The group pressed its case after winning 19 of the 20 mayoral elections where it had reached the run-off stage last Sunday, including the capital Rome the northern industrial capital of Turin. The results dealt a significant blow to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party (PD) and were hailed by supporters of 5-Star as a possible springboard to the national government. The movement’s leader, comedian Beppe Grillo, has also called for a referendum on whether Italy should stay in the European Union. “We entered the European Parliament to change many treaties,” Mr Di Maio said. “We are now waiting for the results of the Brexit referendum. The mere fact that a country like Great Britain is holding a referendum on whether to leave the EU signals the failure of the European Union,” he said. Last week, Mr Nigel Farage, leader of the pro-Brexit UK Independence Party, said the victory of 5-Star’s Virginia Raggi as Rome’s first woman mayor would be the start of the disintegration of the EU.

NGT directs 5-star hotel to submit details of water use

0.7445894 06 June 2016 08:41:12 The Asian Age

Petitioner alleged that 5-star hotels were using several lakh litres of ground water. The National Green Tribunal has directed a five-star hotel here to submit details of its water consumption after a plea alleged that the hotel was illegally extracting ground water and causing environmental degradation. A bench headed by Justice U D Salvi directed Hotel Jaypee Vasant to inform the tribunal about the supply of water it received through tankers between August, 2015 to January, 2016 and also submit all bills in this regard. "We direct the Respondent No 1 (Hotel Jaypee Vasant) to make a candid statement as to the supply of water through tankers between the period of August, 2015 to January, 2016 and place all such bills for the said period before us on the next date," the bench said while posting the matter for next hearing on July 15. During the hearing, Delhi Jal Board told the bench that the hotel has two sanctioned water lines and the average consumption for 26 days is 139 kilo litres that is 5.3 litres per day through one of the water lines. The consumption from the other water line is almost negligible, he said. The counsel appearing for the hotel informed the bench that the water requirements are met either by Delhi Jal Board or water tankers. The tribunal had last year issued notices to three five-star hotels, Central Ground Water Authority, Delhi Jal Board, New Delhi Municipal Council, Central Pollution Control Board. The directions came while hearing a plea filed by Delhi resident Shailesh Singh seeking directions to immediately stop withdrawal of ground water without permission. Singh had alleged that these five-star hotels were using "several lakh litres" of ground water and the sources of water are not visible in their premises. The plea had alleged that according to Delhi Pollution Control Committee, one of the hotels was extracting 2,22,600 litres of water from supply and is having two bore-wells to extract ground water. Earlier, the tribunal had imposed a fine of Rs 7.5 lakh on one of the hotels after it found "unsatisfactory" rain water harvesting systems in their premises.
