Merkel Agrees To Seek Cap On Refugee Admissions To Germany

7.044647 10 October 2017 01:00:42 WN.com - Europe News

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has agreed to aim for a limit on Germany's refugee intake, marking a significant retreat from her previous rejection of a cap, CNN reports. Merkel made the announcement Monday in a joint news conference with Horst Seehofer, leader of the Christian Social Union – the more conservative sister party to Merkel's Christian Democratic Union – after discussions in which the two parties sought compromises on a number of issues following poor results in the federal elections two weeks ago. The parties have agreed to try to limit the number of refugees arriving in Germany each year to 200,000 – a policy that Seehofer has repeatedly demanded and Merkel had consistently...

Angela Merkel Severely Criticized Countries Unwilling to Accept More Refugees

3.1425912 28 August 2016 23:08:18 Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency)

Angela Merkel expressed her severe criticism towards the countries in Europe who took a stance by saying they will not be admitting any more Muslim refugees. She noted that each and every country should make a contribution to solving the migrant crisis and added that countries with smaller budgets should be allowed to admit a smaller number of people. ''We are about to see exactly how the situation can be balanced out,'' Merkel said, as quoted by a local TV station. The German Chancellor noted that not allowing people in a country on the basis of their religion would be a mistake. She also urged the Turkish minority in Germany to help alleviate the dialogue with the country, as opposed to making it worse. ''We expect people of Turkish origin, who have been living in Germany for a long time to demonstrate a high level of loyalty to our country,'' she added. Merkel did not share her plans as to whether she will be running for office again, and noted she will make the announcement later on during the year.

Angela Merkel: The Influx of Refugees Will Change Germany in the Future

2.0687134 10 September 2015 12:19:53 Morocco World News

Casablanca – German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters at a joint news conference with Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel that the uncontrollable influx of refugees will “occupy and change” Germany in the coming years. Chancellor Merkel promised that Germany would do everything in its power to speed up asylum procedures and provide the refugees with suitable shelter. Therefore, Germany will spend an additional €6 billion, of which states and local governments will provide €3 billion while the federal government will contribute the remaining €3 billion. Nevertheless, the chancellor made it clear that Germany will not be able to solve the conflict on its own, and that “it is time for the European Union to pull its weight.” In the meantime, Chancellor Merkel praised all the local volunteers and citizens who have helped and are still helping refugees to feel welcome in the federal republic of Germany. Thus, she proudly said that this has "painted a picture of Germany which can make us proud of our country." Chancellor Merkel firmly stated that refugees in need of protection would receive it. On the other hand, refugees that do not have any rights for asylum will be sent home immediately. Although Germany is currently the leading country hosting refugees, Mrs. Merkel told the reporters that “ will only manage to cope with these challenges if we rely on European solidarity.” French President Francois Hollande recently declared that France will take in 24,000 refugees in response to the ongoing crisis. Equally important to note, Chancellor Merkel and President Hollande both want the EU to develop a plan for each country to participate fairly. Long lines of buses have left Budapest packed with people bound for Austria, which says it has agreed with Germany to let them in as Hungary gives in to crowds, including Syrian refugees, that had set out on foot for Western Europe. Hungary's government said on Saturday about 100 buses would pick up thousands of migrants camped in front of Budapest's main railway terminus and another 1,200 striding down the main highway to Vienna led by a Syrian refugee and chanting "Germany, Germany!" Austria said they would be granted entry, regardless of European Union rules. Smiling refugees boarded the buses, waving goodbye to Hungarian volunteers and aid workers. "Because of today's emergency situation...
